Below is what has been going on with me. Thankfully I am working full time again, which means weekends are the mornings I can get out and fish. Typically around Wednesday or so, (today), I check the surf forecast, and it seems like this is what I have been seeing for the past few months. Today's weekend forecast;

Fri...E winds 10 kt...becoming S in the afternoon. Wind waves less than 2 ft. NW swell 4 to 8 ft. Chance of showers.

Fri Night...S winds 5 to 10 kt. Wind waves less than 2 ft. NW swell 5 to 10 ft. Showers likely.

Sat...S winds 5 to 10 kt...becoming W 5 to 15 kt. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft. NW swell 5 to 10 ft. Chance of showers.

Sun...W winds 5 to 15 kt. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft. NW swell 4 to TOO BIG !!!

I realize you COULD / CAN fly fish in these conditions, but after numerous attempts over the years, I choose to wait for the surf to be in that 3-5 foot range or smaller. I expect some hot fishing and good structure when the surf backs off a bit.

Haven't been since I went about a month ago, similar to Tommy - waiting for the surf to back off a bit.... Last two trips have been "survival" sessions in big, raucous water with few bites and fish...at least I didn't get skunked 8)

Went to Rio this morning and only got one medium sized fish using grubs. A few other guys using bait or grubs had 0 to 1 fish… slow.

Fished Friday evening -- had 4 hits -- got one 10"+ redtail -- never got one of this species this far south before -- at Rio below Platforms. Drifting bottom with sand worm imitation. Cold! Side shore/on shore 10 knots+.

Tight Lines, Rich
